Mysterious Monsters is a trivia game show where contestants have to fight enemies in an RPG-like battle screen by answering questions on different categories, and try to survive through the final round with the most gold.
The game was designed by Isla Hinck, programmed by developer Jason Wishnov from Iridium Studios[1], and is hosted by Michael Huber.
History
Mysterious Monsters first stated under the working title Huber's Game Show and was revealed as a Patreon goal[2] during Easy Livin' 2018. They followed up the announcement with the release of a playtest teaser[3] under the official name Mysterious Monsters on December 11, 2018.
Despite not meeting the goal on Patreon, they decided to move forward with production after moving into The Studio. The game show premiered on March 19, 2019 ahead of their third anniversary celebration. In addition to the show premiere, they also held the Mysterious Monster Mash, a live version of the game show featuring members of the community as contestants.
Following the release of the special remote Season 1 finale on April 1, 2020, the show went on hiatus due to the global COVID-19 pandemic halting production at The Studio.
On September 17, 2020, Easy Allies announced[4] that as part of their partnership with Roost, some of their series were launching on RoosterTeeth.com. Starting October 21, recent episodes of Mysterious Monsters, the Easy Allies Podcast, Frame Trap, Box Peek, and Achieve It Yourself! would be featured on the site. These shows were selected to serve as an introduction to Easy Allies and for the overall fit with Rooster Teeth's audiences. New episodes will still be posted around the same schedule on the Easy Allies YouTube channel and podcast feeds.
Game Mechanics
Format
Rounds 1&2
Each player starts the game with 15 HP and 20 G, and they take turns choosing one of the five monsters on screen, representing the different trivia categories. Then they pick a weak point and a question will be revealed along with a number representing the damage value, ranging from 1 to 8 depending on its difficulty. If they answer correctly, the monster takes damage and the player earns ten times the value in gold. However, when a player does not answer correctly, they will take the damage instead.
When a monster is defeated, the player takes 20 times the value in gold instead, and all the players who did damage to it get a "Lucky Loot" shot, one per correct answer.
After three monsters have been defeated, or fled due to not having remaining weak points and not receiving enough damage, players advance to the next round while keeping their items, HP, gold, and any effect already in place.
Round 3
In this round the players will fight a final boss all at once, but before it starts they have a final chance to buy items from the Shop, which they can use at any time.
The host will ask various questions in rapid-fire style, and in order to answer, the contestants have to hit a box with an axe, whoever does so first. If they're correct, they'll do damage and earn gold as usual, and the host will proceed to the next question. If they're wrong, the other players will have the opportunity to buzz in to answer the current question.
When the boss is defeated, it will change into its final form for a numerical question. Players will have ten seconds to hit the box as many times as they want, and the number of hits counts as their final answer. All players will get gold, ranging from 0 to 200 depending on how close they are to the correct answer.
Finally, the player with the highest amount of gold wins the game. The winner gets to choose a prize from The Fabulous Wall of Prizes, courtesy of sponsor Salmon Globe.
